After some trash talking over Christmas, Brian and I decided that we better get serious about our running. No child of ours will have the unfortunate name of Elrod on our watch. We went and bought new running shoes and a heart rate monitor for Brian. We are ready to take on this 13.1 miles.
Brian was very excited to start running, since he was so fast in high school he thought it would be a cinch. Kate, knowing how hard it was to train for her last half, nodded her head and tried to be supportive.
So, yesterday we decided to get back on the running "saddle". Brian went out for his first run in quite some time (some say years, he will tell you a couple months). 24 minutes after he left the house, he came back. We are both proud of his first run! He completed 1.75 miles, running for most of it, finishing with a "cool down" walk.
Kate helped him stretch and then went for her 6.0 mile run. She definitely is a bit slower than usual, Christmas cookies added a few inches to her already too large thighs. But, she was able to use her new heartrate monitor and finish in under 10 minute miles.
We also bought a scale to assist in our training. Brian and Kate were both a little dismayed by the readout when they stepped on it. Needless to say, we will NOT be posting our weight. Hopefully, we will be able to post our loss as we move closer to April 24, 2010.

The Challenge & Bet
This Christmas started as no other, but took an extremely ugly turn on Christmas morning. Kate asked her sister-in-law, Missy, if she would like to do a half marathon with her in Nashville in April. Of course, Missy was all for it. As soon as Brian caught wind of this, he mentioned that he would like to do it as well. Well, those that know the Turzas know how competitive we can be.
Needless to say, by the end of our Christmas, both Kate & Brian (the Turzas) and Missy & Brett (the Elrods) were betting against each other who could win the race. It was decided that the losing team would name their first born child after the winning team. This means some poor child will be named either Elrod Turza or Turza (Turzelle if a girl) Elrod.
Let us give you some fitness background on us, so you can make a wager, too:
Kate & Brian - newly married and have DEFINITELY packed on the "newlywed" weight.
Kate recently ran a half marathon the beginning of December, finishing in decent enough time - but seriously lacking in speed.
Brian has recently enjoyed taking some "time off" from his sports. In the past, he was an avid baseball player and wrestler (in high school)
As for Missy & Brett, I'll let them fill you in on their fitness level.
Our plan is that this blog will track Brian & Kate's progress in training for this Half Marathon. Wish us luck!!
